Radio Interview with Tom Beaudoin about Rock and Theology
Posted in: General by David Dault on September 9, 2012
Things Not Seen: Conversations about Culture and Faith is a radio show and podcast that explores questions of faith and belief lived in the complexities of our contemporary world. The show features long-form interviews in the style of NPR’s Fresh Air broadcast, only with a specifically religious focus.
This week Tom Beaudoin was featured on the show to talk about the Rock and Theology project. I talked to Tom for about 45 minutes about the origin and development of the project, as well as where it is headed in the future.
You can listen to the show online here.

Great interview, Tom. I back the ‘making music together’ idea. Great thought…and would open more initiatives, I am sure.

It was nice to hear your voice and have you speak about this project Tom. Perhaps more audio or video posts from the bloggers would be fun and less sterile. Also, what about hearing from the other side…the rockers that you write about. Have you ever tried to engage the bands/artists personally for an interview? Bono might be game.
On the topic of, “who are the readers of R&T or what attracts them?” You all have written a lot about the phenomena of post-religion or dispossession. I think I read R&T to help me work towards or sustain the integration that feels elusive and that I consistently seek…that of the truth of both my faith tradition and the lived culture.
R&T makes me less “post-…” (if that makes any sense). Thank you for your efforts.

Maeve and Nicole, thanks for your replies. Nicole, thank you for suggesting more audio or video posts from the bloggers. We can see how we might open up that possibility. Regarding hearing from musicians, well, we are occasionally “liked” by some musicians you would recognize (like Bob Dylan or whoever runs his FB page), and once in a great while we hear from artists about whom we’ve written (or really, their representatives). For example, we’ve gotten communications/mentions from Sebastian Bach, from Acrassicauda, from The Sunshine Factory, and from the manager for a well-known pop/rock singer. And from time to time I get requests from bands or their agents or managers to feature their music here. Actually there are some terrific artists who have agreed to be interviewed by me but I have not been able to find the time to make it happen. We should keep up on that, as you suggest. Finally, thank you for your frankness about R&T helping you “feel less ‘post’…” That does make sense to me. I write more than others about “postmodern” approaches to religion, or post-religious approaches to music, but that is certainly not the only approach, nor is it the “official” approach of the blog. Just my own theological perspective. I hope you’ll keep reading. You can see what a terrific set of people are writing here! Finally, I want to take you up on your question about who R&T readers are. I’ll do a post about that soon. We should issue a call to readers to tell us about yourselves and encourage more of a dialogue in that and other ways. Thanks, Nicole.
